One of the highest peaks of the Greater Caucasus in Azerbaijan, located in Qusar District. The area supports summer alpine pastures, hiking routes and a growing winter ski infrastructure at nearby resorts.
Mount Shahdagh is a high mountain in the northeastern section of Azerbaijan’s portion of the Greater Caucasus, rising to about 4,243 meters. It is one of the country’s principal peaks and a prominent feature of the Qusar District.
The mountain forms part of the rugged Caucasus chain and contributes to local alpine climate and hydrology, with steep slopes and high-elevation terrain used for seasonal grazing and outdoor recreation at lower elevations. The area around the peak is included within conservation and protected landscapes.
Shahdagh sits near Azerbaijan’s border with the Russian Federation, in the northeastern Caucasus region, and is accessible from regional roads and mountain routes originating in nearby districts.

- Plan summer ascents when snow and ice are reduced; Mount Shahdagh lies within the Greater Caucasus and is best approached from the Qusar side where common trailheads and local guides are based.
- Combine the trek with a visit to Shahdag National Park - the park authority can provide up‑to‑date local route information and regulations that many independent visitors overlook.
- Hire a local guide for route‑finding and safety in the high mountains; weather there can change quickly and marked infrastructure is limited compared with lower, more touristed peaks.

Summer is best for hiking and climbing Mount Shahdagh; winter suits skiing in the nearby resort but the summit remains very cold.
