Mount Sannine
Mountain Lebanese limestone mountain overlooking Beirut with springs
East of Beirut Mount Sannine holds limestone plateaus and seasonal snow; locals and day-hikers use its trails for winter skiing, spring walks and views over the Beqaa and coastal plain.
Mount Sannine is a prominent peak in the Mount Lebanon range and one of the higher summits in central Lebanon. It is known for its limestone massif and seasonal snow cover that can persist through winter at higher elevations.
The mountain’s geology includes extensive limestone and karst features; springs and snowmelt from its slopes are an important source of freshwater flowing toward coastal plains. The profile of the peak is visible from much of the Mount Lebanon Governorate and the greater Beirut area.
Mount Sannine is a natural feature of the Mount Lebanon chain and has not been heavily developed; traditional grazing and seasonal human use occur on its slopes. Over time the peak has remained an important hydrological and scenic landmark for nearby communities.
Located in the Mount Lebanon Governorate, the mountain rises above the coastal plain east of Beirut and dominates the central part of the Mount Lebanon range.
- Winter snow: Snow commonly caps the summit in winter, making the mountain a visible, snow-covered landmark from the coastal plain on clear days.
- Water supply: Limestone geology creates karst features and supports springs that contribute to regional water supplies.
How to Get to Mount Sannine #
Mount Sannine is in the Mount Lebanon range east of Beirut and is most easily reached by private car from Beirut. Drive east from Beirut into the mountains (the trip is commonly under 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic); mountain roads lead to villages and trailheads on Sannine’s slopes (villages such as Faraya/Aley provide common access points). There is little in the way of direct regular public transit to trailheads, so taxis or rental cars are the usual option; short walks or hikes from nearby village roads lead to viewpoints and higher trails.
Tips for Visiting Mount Sannine #
- Choose a clear morning for the drive or hike-haze and clouds frequently roll in later in the day, and mornings offer the best panoramic views toward Beirut and the Mediterranean.
- If you plan to go in winter, check road conditions first: higher slopes receive snow and some local access roads can require a 4x4 or may be temporarily impassable.
- Many visitors stick to roadside viewpoints; for quieter scenery and pine-forest walks, seek the less-trafficked trails east of the main road rather than only the restaurant viewpoints.
