Mount Rokkō Mountain

Mount Rokkō is a mountain range in Hyōgo Prefecture north of Kobe that forms the backdrop to the city and Osaka Bay; the range’s highest point reaches about 931 meters.

The area is a major recreational zone for the Kansai region, with observation points prized for city and harbor panoramas, especially at night, plus built attractions such as gardens, terraces and restaurants. Hiking trails traverse the range and shorter walks from cable car or road access make it a frequent day-trip from Kobe and Osaka.

The Rokkō area developed as a leisure and viewpoint district in the modern era and remains one of the principal green and recreation spaces immediately adjacent to the urban Kobe area.

• Easy access options: Several access options exist from Kobe - roads, a cable car and ropeway - making summit and mid-mountain facilities reachable without technical climbing.

• Mount Rokkō summit (Rokkō-san): The highest point of the Rokkō range, offering sweeping views over Kobe, Osaka Bay and the Kansai plain; the summit area includes observation points popular for cityscape and night views.
• Rokko Garden Terrace: A developed visitor complex on the mid- and upper slopes with shops, restaurants and terraces that provide panoramic viewpoints over Kobe and Osaka Bay.
• Cable car and ropeway access: Public transport and tourist links that serve the range, including the historic cable car up to the mid-slopes and a ropeway connection toward Arima Onsen, offer easy access to hiking and viewpoints.

From Kobe’s Sannomiya Station, take the Rokko Cable or bus services to the mountain’s observation areas and Rokko Garden Terrace. Driving up via prefectural roads is also straightforward.

• Rokko is extremely accessible from Kobe - take the Rokko Cable or the bus from JR Sannomiya for a quick ascent.
• Head to the Rokko Garden Terrace or Rokko Alpine Botanical Garden for views and cultivated walking paths.
• Evening visits are popular for the city nightscape; bring a sweater as temperatures drop quickly after sunset.
