Mount Rinjani is an active stratovolcano on the island of Lombok and the second-highest volcano in Indonesia; it is famed for its dramatic caldera and the emerald Segara Anak crater lake within that caldera. The mountain and its national park are popular destinations for multi-day trekking and camping.

Trekking itineraries typically aim for the crater rim and lake, with scenic views across Lombok and, on clear days, neighbouring islands. Hot springs, volcanic landscapes and remote campsites are common features of the standard routes.

The volcanic complex has a long eruptive history and remains an active geological feature monitored by Indonesian volcanological authorities; the area is managed as Rinjani National Park to protect natural and cultural resources.

Mount Rinjani occupies the northern part of Lombok and is accessed from trailheads near the villages of Senaru and Sembalun, which serve as the main starting points for treks.

  • Elevation & trekking: The summit reaches 3,726 metres above sea level and most visitors access the mountain by organised multi-day treks requiring permits and guides.

What to See #

  • Segara Anak (crater lake): A crater lake that fills a volcanic caldera known as Segara Anak, popular with trekkers for its striking green water and shoreline camping opportunities.
  • Crater rim and trekking routes: The high caldera rim and the crater edge offer panoramic views and are the primary goals for multi-day treks; these routes often start from the villages of Senaru or Sembalun.

How to Get to Mount Rinjani #

To reach Mount Rinjani you typically fly to Lombok (Lombok International Airport, LOP) or arrive by ferry from Bali, then drive to one of the main trailhead villages - Senaru (north) or Sembalun (east). Road access to the trailheads is by car or shuttle; expect a drive of a couple of hours from Lombok International Airport or from Mataram depending on route and traffic. Vehicles park at the trailhead villages and treks to the crater/summit begin on foot with multi-day hiking routes operated by licensed guides.

Tips for Visiting Mount Rinjani #

  • Plan your trek during the dry season (roughly April-October) for firmer trails and clearer summit/sunrise views; avoid attempting the climb in the rainy season when paths get hazardous.
  • Choose your route deliberately - Sembalun is the more gradual, sunrise-friendly approach and Senaru is shorter and more forested - and book a licensed guide and park permit through the official park offices in Senaru or Sembalun in advance.
  • Reserve campsites and guides ahead of high season and start ascents very early each day to spread groups on narrow trails; many visitors don't factor in travel time to trailheads from Lombok towns, so allow extra transfer time.

Best Time to Visit Mount Rinjani #

The optimal time for climbing Mount Rinjani is the dry season (roughly May-October) when trails and weather are most stable for multi-day treks.

Best trekking season
May-October · 10-30°C (varies widely by elevation)
Drier, more stable weather that makes trails safer and camping more comfortable; lower camps are warm while higher camps and the summit are cold at night.
Wet season / limited trekking
November-April · 15-30°C (lower elevations)
Heavy rains make routes slippery and river crossings hazardous; many trekking operators restrict or suspend climbs during this period.
