Main image

Mount Pelée is an active stratovolcano that dominates the northern tip of Martinique, rising to about 1,397 meters above sea level. It is best known for its catastrophic eruption on 8 May 1902 which destroyed the town of St. Pierre.

The mountain offers marked trails and rugged volcanic terrain used for day hikes and scientific visits; trails approach from towns such as St. Pierre and Morne-Rouge and lead toward the summit crater and viewpoints over the Caribbean coast. Hikers encounter steep forested slopes, volcanic rock and panoramic views of the northern coastline when weather is clear.

Human settlement and use around Mount Pelée have been shaped by its eruptions. The 1902 eruption produced a deadly pyroclastic flow that nearly annihilated St. Pierre; the volcano has had subsequent eruptive episodes and remains monitored by volcanological services.

The volcano sits at the northern end of the island of Martinique in the Lesser Antilles. The nearest major town is St. Pierre at the volcano’s base and the regional capital, Fort-de-France, lies to the south of the massif.

How to Get to Mount Pelée #

Mount Pelée is reached most easily from the island’s main population center, Fort‑de‑France. Drive north along the main coastal road to the town of Saint‑Pierre (roughly 30 km, about 40-50 minutes depending on traffic) and use Saint‑Pierre as the base for hikes. From Saint‑Pierre local roads and marked trailheads lead up into the volcano’s slopes; summit routes are on foot from the nearest trailheads and require appropriate hiking gear and preparation.

Tips for Visiting Mount Pelée #

  • Check volcanic activity and access restrictions before you go - Mount Pelée is an active volcano and trails or the summit are sometimes closed by local authorities, so confirm with the Martinique volcano observatory or the regional park office on the day you plan to hike.
  • Start very early in the morning to maximize visibility and avoid the afternoon cloud/fog that commonly forms on tropical volcanic peaks; early starts also reduce heat and boost chances of clear views over Saint‑Pierre and the northern coast.
  • Hire a local guide or join a guided hike if you plan to reach the summit - guides know current trail conditions, fastest legal approaches, and safer routes when parts of the volcano are restricted.
