Mount Papandayan
Mountain Active volcano with volcanic craters in West Java
West Java volcano noted for a broad steaming crater with fumaroles and sulfur fields. Morning ridge walks rise above low clouds; visitors hike clear trails for close crater views and alpine grasslands.
Mount Papandayan is an andesitic stratovolcano in West Java, Indonesia, with an elevation around 2,665 meters and a prominent summit crater containing fumaroles and steaming ground. The volcano is notable for its accessible crater area with visible volcanic activity.
Walks around the crater rim reveal sulfur vents, mud pots and domed fumarolic fields, and short hikes give wide views over surrounding agricultural plains and nearby Garut regency. The mountain is used for day hikes and scientific monitoring because of ongoing geothermal activity.
Papandayan produced a major phreatic eruption in 2002 that reshaped parts of the summit area and highlighted local volcanic hazards; it is monitored by Indonesian volcanic authorities. The volcano has influenced local soils and land use on its lower slopes.
The volcano is located in West Java, within driving distance of the town of Garut and several hours by road from Bandung, set above cultivated foothills and volcanic plains of western Java.
- Elevation: Rises to about 2,665 meters and features a broad crater with active fumarolic areas.
- Recent activity: Experienced a significant phreatic eruption in 2002 that altered the summit area and drew attention to its hazards.

Tips for Visiting Mount Papandayan #
- Go early in the day to see the crater and fumarolic areas before thermal haze and crowds build; volcanic steam and gases can be stronger later in the day, which reduces visibility and comfort.
- Stay strictly on the marked paths and wooden walkways near steaming vents and unstable ground-those boardwalks protect fragile terrain and keep you away from hazardous fumaroles.
- Check the volcano's current activity status with local authorities (West Java forestry/park office or the Indonesian Center for Volcanology) before visiting, and consider hiring a local guide at the trailhead who knows where boardwalks and safe viewpoints are.
