Mount Oku
Mountain Cameroon highland peak surrounding Lake Oku and biodiversity
Rising in Cameroon’s western highlands, Mount Oku anchors Kilum-Ijim forest and endemic species; conservation-minded trekkers visit for birdwatching, cloud-forest hikes and community-run lodges.
Mount Oku is a volcanic peak in northwest Cameroon and the highest point of the Oku Massif. It rises above surrounding highlands and supports montane forest that is ecologically distinct from lower-elevation zones.
The mountain’s slopes include the Kilum-Ijim forest reserve and a small highland crater lake near the summit; these habitats host endemic plants and bird species and are a focus for conservation. Trails connect the forest reserve and lake to nearby villages and provide routes for day hikes and research visits.
The Oku massif is part of the Cameroon Volcanic Line and formed through volcanic activity that produced the local high-relief landscape and crater features. Human activity on the mountain has long combined subsistence agriculture at lower elevations with conservation and eco-tourism projects in the forested zones.
Located in the Northwest Region of Cameroon, Mount Oku sits near the town of Oku and is accessible from regional roads; the mountain dominates the local highland landscape.

Mount Oku (Northwest Region, Cameroon) is typically reached from the regional hub of Bamenda. From Bamenda take shared minibuses or bush taxis bound for Ndu/Oku (operators run regular services on the mountain routes); these drop you at one of the villages around the Kilum-Ijim forest. From the local villages the summit and conservation area are reached on foot: expect several hours of hiking on dirt tracks and footpaths through forested terrain - local guides from Oku/Ndu are commonly used for navigation and logistics.
Tips for Visiting Mount Oku #
- Hire a community guide from Ndu/Oku to access the Kilum-Ijim forest and to support local conservation initiatives-guides know the best routes and birding spots.
