Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve
Nature Reserve Biodiverse UNESCO reserve spanning Guinea and neighbors
A cross-border mountain reserve in West Africa, Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve is UNESCO-listed for endemic species and highland savanna-rainforest mosaics; researchers and guided treks study its biodiversity.
The Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve is a protected montane area centred on the Nimba Range in West Africa; it conserves high-elevation rainforest, grasslands and numerous endemic species.
The reserve is valued for its biodiversity and unusual montane habitats, with steep ridgelines, high plateaux and specialised flora and fauna not found in surrounding lowlands. Scientific visits and guided treks are the primary ways people experience the area; access is controlled to protect sensitive ecosystems.
The Nimba area has long been recognised for its biological importance and has been set aside under different protection statuses to conserve its endemic species and habitats. The site has also been affected by historical iron-ore mining interest in parts of the range.
The reserve straddles international borders in the western African highlands of the Nimba range, occupying parts of southeastern Guinea and adjacent sections near the Ivory Coast/Liberia border area.
- Highest peak: Includes Mount Richard-Molard, which reaches approximately 1,752 metres and is the highest point of the range.
- Conservation value: Designated to protect montane forest and endemic species unique to the Nimba range and its high-elevation habitats.
