Mount Muhabura is a dormant stratovolcano in the Virunga Range on the border between Rwanda and Uganda, reaching roughly 4,127 meters in elevation. It is one of the prominent high peaks of the Virunga volcanic chain.

Trail routes lead up forested lower slopes and alpine terrain toward a steep summit crater; climbs offer long views across neighboring Virunga peaks and into the surrounding rift landscape. The mountain is popular with hikers who use established mountain trails and local guides.

Muhabura formed through volcanic activity in the East African Rift system and is part of the chain of volcanoes that includes nearby Karisimbi and Gahinga; its last major eruptive history is ancient, and it is generally described as dormant. Land use around the mountain has included pastoralism and small-scale agriculture on lower slopes.

The volcano sits along the Rwanda-Uganda border in the Virunga massif, north of Lake Kivu and within a landscape of steep volcanic cones, valleys, and cultivated foothills; nearby towns on either side of the border provide access and guiding services.

  • Elevation: Rises to about 4,127 meters and is one of the higher peaks in the Virunga volcanic chain.
  • Border peak: Sits on the Rwanda-Uganda border and is commonly climbed from trails on both sides of the frontier.

What to See #

  • Summit crater: A steep summit crater near the top often contains a small, seasonal pool and marks the volcano's summit area.

How to Get to Mount Muhabura #

Fly into Kigali International Airport, then travel by road north toward Musanze (formerly Ruhengeri) and the Volcanoes National Park area - the drive is roughly 100-120 km and typically takes about 2.5-3 hours on the main northbound road (RN3). Public minibuses run between Kigali and Musanze.

Mount Muhabura’s trailheads are accessed from the Volcanoes National Park/ Kinigi area near Musanze; permits and guides are arranged at the park headquarters and hikes start from nearby trailheads (walk-in distance depends on the chosen route).

Tips for Visiting Mount Muhabura #

  • Start your climb very early in the day to avoid the common mid‑day cloud cover in the Virunga chain-morning clarity gives the best chance of seeing neighboring peaks and lakes from the summit.
  • Arrange permits and a park‑approved guide at the Volcanoes National Park office in Kinigi/Musanze before you set out; local guides handle navigation, safety and briefings on trail conditions.
  • Expect steep, exposed sections near the summit; give yourself extra time for slow, careful progress and be prepared to turn back if visibility or weather deteriorates, since summit views are the main reward.

Best Time to Visit Mount Muhabura #

Go in the dry seasons (June-September or December-February) for the clearest trails and best summit visibility.

Main dry season
June-September · ~10-20°C daytime (higher elevations cooler at night)
Clearer skies and firmer trails make this the most reliable window for hiking Mount Muhabura and for good summit views.
Secondary dry season
December-February · similar to June-September; cool nights at altitude
A shorter dry window with generally good hiking conditions and clearer visibility compared with the rainy months.
Rainy seasons
March-May and October-November · cooler, often damp
Frequent rain, muddy and slippery trails, and reduced visibility make trekking more difficult and less predictable.
