Mount Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi River in the United States, rising to 6,684 feet (2,037 metres). It is located in the Black Mountains subrange of the southern Appalachian Mountains in western North Carolina.

The summit area features a short paved trail to a stone observation platform and visitor facilities at Mount Mitchell State Park; the site is popular for panoramic mountain views, short hikes and interpretive displays. A paved approach road brings visitors close to the summit, making the peak accessible without extensive backcountry travel.

The mountain was named after Elisha Mitchell, a 19th-century geologist and educator who conducted surveys of the region; the area later became a state park in 1915 to protect the summit environment. Over the 20th century the park developed visitor infrastructure while conserving high-elevation forest habitats.
