Mount Mitchell is the highest peak east of the Mississippi River in the United States, rising to 6,684 feet (2,037 metres). It is located in the Black Mountains subrange of the southern Appalachian Mountains in western North Carolina.
The summit area features a short paved trail to a stone observation platform and visitor facilities at Mount Mitchell State Park; the site is popular for panoramic mountain views, short hikes and interpretive displays. A paved approach road brings visitors close to the summit, making the peak accessible without extensive backcountry travel.
The mountain was named after Elisha Mitchell, a 19th-century geologist and educator who conducted surveys of the region; the area later became a state park in 1915 to protect the summit environment. Over the 20th century the park developed visitor infrastructure while conserving high-elevation forest habitats.
Mount Mitchell sits within Mount Mitchell State Park in western North Carolina’s Yancey County, in a high, forested section of the Appalachians known for steep ridges and cool, montane conditions.

How to Get to Mount Mitchell #
Drive: Mount Mitchell is reached by car from Asheville, North Carolina - about 35 miles (≈56 km) northeast of downtown Asheville. The usual approach is via US‑19/US‑19E toward Burnsville and then NC‑80 up toward Mount Mitchell State Park. Park at the state park lot and follow the short paved trail from the parking area to the summit (the final walk is only a few hundred metres to the observation platform).
Tips for Visiting Mount Mitchell #
- Visit early morning or on weekdays for the clearest views from the summit and to avoid the peak summer weekend crowds at the small summit parking and observation area.
- Access the summit via NC‑128 off the Blue Ridge Parkway and park at the official state park lot; the short paved trail from the parking area leads directly to the observation platform and visitor center displays.
- Don't rush past the short interpretive exhibits and the high-elevation spruce-fir forest around the summit - many visitors miss the unique alpine flora and the museum information explaining why this peak is ecologically distinct.
