Mount Meron
Mountain Highest peak in Israel's Galilee and nature reserve
Israel’s highest Galilean summit, Mount Meron supports cedar and oak woodlands, marked trails and a tomb site that draws pilgrims on Lag BaOmer. Hikers use forest tracks and picnic clearings.
Mount Meron is the highest peak in Israel’s Galilee highlands and is set within a declared nature reserve that protects woodland and upland habitats. The mountain is both a natural and religious landmark.
Trails through oak and mixed woodland lead to summit viewpoints and picnic areas, and the site is used for hiking, birdwatching and seasonal recreation. On the mountain’s slopes sits a major Jewish pilgrimage site centred on the tomb traditionally associated with Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai.
Long used by local communities for grazing and seasonal travel, the mountain area was formally designated as a nature reserve to protect its flora and fauna. The tomb on the slopes has been a place of veneration for many centuries and expanded its role as a pilgrimage destination in modern times.
Mount Meron rises in the Upper Galilee of northern Israel, north of the city of Safed and forming part of the higher ridges that separate the Galilee from the lower valleys to the west.
