Bar’am National Park in Israel’s Northern District preserves the ruins of an ancient village and a well-preserved stone synagogue dating to the late Roman-Talmudic period (roughly 3rd-6th centuries CE). The site is protected as an archaeological national park.

The main attraction is the stone synagogue with a three-arched facade and carved architectural elements, set within the remains of a small rural settlement. Visitors can inspect the synagogue foundations, surrounding ruins and the immediate agricultural terraces and landscape that surround the site.

The synagogue and village were constructed and used by a Jewish community in the late Roman and Byzantine eras; the standing stone synagogue is typically dated to the Talmudic period. The hill above the ruins is occupied by the depopulated Maronite village of Kafr Bir’im, whose residents were evacuated in 1948 and whose ruins remain visible.

The park sits in Israel’s Upper Galilee within the Northern District, close to the historical site of Kafr Bir’im and near the country’s northern border. It is accessed from local roads serving the Galilee archaeological sites.

• Synagogue features: The synagogue facade has three central doorways and carved stone detail that make it one of the most intact ancient synagogue remains in the region.
• Kafr Bir’im nearby: The abandoned Maronite village of Kafr Bir’im sits immediately above the park and is historically linked to events of 1948, visible from the site.

• Kfar Bar’am synagogue: The well-preserved Late Roman to Talmudic-period synagogue at the heart of the site, notable for its carved stonework and three-arched facade; generally dated to the 3rd-6th centuries CE.
• Kafr Bir’im ruins: Ruins of the nearby Maronite village of Kafr Bir’im, including a ruined church and terraces, located on the hill above the archaeological site and associated with the 1948 evacuation of its residents.

Bar’am National Park is in Israel’s Upper Galilee, near Kibbutz Bar’am. From Safed (Tzfat), drive north on local roads (about 25-40 minutes). Public buses run to nearby towns; local taxi services can provide final-mile transport. The park has parking for private vehicles.

• Walk the village and visit the reconstruction of the Galilean synagogue for quiet views rather than crowds.
• Bring binoculars - the park perimeter offers fine vantage points for birding and views across the Hula Valley.
