Mount Merapi

Mount Merapi is an active stratovolcano on the border of Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta in Indonesia, with a summit elevation of about 2,930 metres, and is one of the country’s most frequently erupting volcanoes.

Merapi has a long record of frequent eruptions documented in historical and scientific records; notable recent activity occurred in 2010 with large pyroclastic flows and significant local impact. The volcano is heavily monitored by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation and local disaster authorities.

Situated roughly north of Yogyakarta on central Java, Merapi dominates the local landscape and sits within a densely populated region with multiple access points from nearby towns and rural villages.

• Safety and access: Activity levels change frequently; access to the upper slopes and crater is restricted during elevated volcanic activity and must be checked with local authorities.
• Viewing and access: Best light and typical clear conditions for views are early morning; guided climbs from official trailheads take several hours and require local guides during permitted periods.

• Summit and crater: The summit crater and upper flanks, which include active lava domes and frequent minor eruptions monitored by Indonesian volcanological agencies.
• Kaliadem observation point: Kaliadem observation area on the southern slopes, used as a visitor lookout and scientific monitoring point when activity permits.
