Mayon
Volcano Actively symmetrical stratovolcano with frequent eruptions
Near Legazpi, Mayon is an active stratovolcano noted for its nearly perfect conical profile; travelers photograph it from Cagsawa ruins, take guided hikes or ATV trips on the flanks, and sample Bicolano cuisine in nearby towns.
Mayon is an active stratovolcano in Albay province, Bicol, widely recognised for its near-perfect conical shape. It is one of the Philippines’ most prominent volcanic landmarks and dominates the skyline around Legazpi City.
Popular viewing points include the ruined bell tower at Cagsawa and multiple roadside viewpoints around Legazpi; these offer panoramic views of the volcano rising to about 2,462 metres. The volcano and surrounding slopes are part of a protected area where regulated trekking is possible when activity levels permit.
Mayon has produced repeated eruptions through recorded history, with significant explosive events that have reshaped its flanks and impacted surrounding settlements. The 1814 eruption buried the town of Cagsawa and left the bell tower ruins that remain a principal historical landmark.
The volcano sits in southeastern Luzon in the Bicol Region, rising directly above Legazpi City and visible across Albay province. Road access to viewpoints is typically via Legazpi, the nearest major city and service centre.
- Shape and height: The edifice is famed for its near-perfect conical profile and reaches approximately 2,462 metres above sea level.
- Safety and access: Access to higher slopes and the crater is frequently restricted by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology during periods of unrest; always check current advisories before planning hikes.
What to See #
- Cagsawa Ruins: The partially preserved bell tower and ruins of the 16th-century Cagsawa Church, set against a clear view of the volcano and a major photo viewpoint.
- Mayon Volcano Natural Park: A protected area that includes trails and managed access points used for viewing, trekking and regulated outdoor activities around the volcano's lower slopes.
How to Get to Mayon #
Fly or take an overnight bus to Legazpi City (the nearest major city) in Albay; Legazpi is served by Bicol International Airport and by the Pan-Philippine Highway (Maharlika Highway/AH26). From Legazpi city center drive about 10-15 km toward Daraga/Ligñon Hill or the Cagsawa Ruins to reach the common Mayon viewpoints-follow local roads off the Maharlika Highway. Local transport: metered taxis, jeepneys or tricycle transfers from Legazpi take roughly 20-40 minutes depending on the viewpoint; walking is minimal once at the chosen viewpoint or park entrance.
Tips for Visiting Mayon #
- Aim for early morning (shortly after sunrise) on a clear day for the best, unobstructed views of Mayon's perfect cone-afternoon haze and clouds often obscure the volcano.
- Use viewpoints around Legazpi (Lignon Hill and the Cagsawa Ruins in Daraga) rather than attempting closer approaches; these spots give iconic photo angles and are safer given Mayon's active status.
- Check PHIVOLCS advisories before planning a climb or close approach-there is an established hazard/danger zone around the cone and access rules change with volcanic activity.
Best Time to Visit Mayon #
Go in the dry season (November-April) for the clearest views of Mayon and safer hiking conditions.
