In Zambezia Province, Mount Mabu preserves one of Mozambique’s largest rainforest patches; eco‑trekkers come for guided forest walks, biodiversity surveys and remote wildlife encounters.
Mount Mabu is a granite massif in Zambezia Province of Mozambique that supports a large tract of moist evergreen forest notable for intact canopy and biological diversity. The forest on Mount Mabu attracted international scientific attention in the early 21st century and has been the focus of biodiversity surveys and conservation interest.
The site contains a mosaic of habitats from lowland forest to montane woodland and has yielded records of plant and animal species of conservation interest, including species new to science and range extensions. Access is typically by dirt roads and forest trails; local communities use surrounding areas for subsistence activities.
Interest in Mount Mabu increased after remote-sensing studies and field expeditions brought attention to the extent and condition of its forest, prompting further biological surveys and conservation discussion.
Geographically it sits inland in northern Zambezia Province, rising above surrounding agricultural landscapes and forming a distinct forested island within a largely cleared region.
- Biodiversity hotspot: Contains one of the largest remaining blocks of moist evergreen forest in Mozambique, noted for high biodiversity and recent scientific discoveries.
