Mount Kyllini
Mountain Greek mountain in the Peloponnese, mythic associations
Also called Mount Cyllene in the Peloponnese, a limestone mountain with pastoral plateaus and hiking trails; classical myths tie the summit to Hermes, and walkers use old shepherd paths and seasonal huts.
Mount Kyllini (also spelled Cyllene or Ziria) is a mountain in the Peloponnese region of Greece, reaching about 2,374 meters in elevation and forming a prominent ridge in the northern Peloponnese. It is well known in Greek tradition for associations with the god Hermes.
The mountain offers alpine terrain, pine and fir slopes, and a network of hiking routes to ridges and summits. Trails cross varied vegetation zones and provide views across the Corinthian Gulf and inland valleys for distances of tens of kilometers. Several smaller peaks and cols make it suitable for day hikes and multi-day routes rather than long technical climbs.
In antiquity the mountain was associated with Greek mythology, notably as a cult place connected to Hermes; in later periods local monasteries and shepherding shaped land use. Modern maps and trail guides date recreational use to the 20th century as road access and hiking interest increased.
Mount Kyllini sits in the northwestern Peloponnese, roughly west of the city of Corinth and west of Athens by road. The terrain around it is mountainous, with the nearest towns and villages at the mountain’s lower slopes and agricultural valleys.
- Elevation: 2,374 meters above sea level, making it one of the highest peaks in the northern Peloponnese.
