Mount Kupe is a 2,064-meter volcanic massif in Cameroon’s Southwest Region and is part of the Bakossi mountain group. It is recognised locally and internationally for its high levels of biodiversity.
The mountain is covered by montane and cloud forest above its lowland slopes and supports many plant and bird endemics. Naturalists and birdwatchers come for species surveys and guided field trips rather than large-scale tourism.
Local communities have long used the lower slopes for agriculture and forest resources. In recent decades the area around the mountain has been the subject of conservation initiatives and biological research that document its endemic flora and fauna.
Mount Kupe sits in Cameroon’s Southwest Region within the Bakossi range, on the western side of the Cameroonian highlands near the Gulf of Guinea coast.
