Mount K4dya, commonly called Koyasan, is a highland monastic complex on the Kii Peninsula in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, established as the centre of Shingon esoteric Buddhism in the early 9th century.
The site contains a dense cluster of religious buildings, pilgrimage routes, temple compounds and an extensive cemetery, with over a hundred temples and related facilities on the plateau. Visitors come for pilgrimage, temple stays (shukubo), Buddhist ceremonies, the atmospheric paths of Okunoin and the main temple complex Kongobu-ji with its ritual halls and gardens.
Founded by the monk Kukai (also known as Kobo Daishi) in 819 as the headquarters for Shingon Buddhism, the site has been a continuous monastic centre since the Heian period and retains many historic buildings, rituals and institutional functions.
Koyasan sits on a forested plateau in the central Kii Peninsula of Wakayama Prefecture, accessed by bus and cable-car from nearby railway terminals; it is within a few dozen kilometres of the larger cities on the Kii Peninsula and is commonly reached from Osaka on day trips or overnight stays.
