Mountain Tall Bornean peak with diverse alpine flora
Mount Kinabalu dominates Sabah as Malaysia’s highest peak (about 4,095 m); its national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Climbers attempt summit treks; botanical diversity and early-morning summit views attract hikers and nature guides.
Mount Kinabalu is the highest mountain in Malaysia, rising to 4,095 metres on the island of Borneo in Sabah and forming the core of Kinabalu Park. The mountain is a focal point for biodiversity and mountain trekking.
The mountain attracts climbers and naturalists for alpine scenery, granite ridges and a very high level of plant and animal diversity for its size. Ascents typically follow maintained trails with an overnight stop at a mountain resthouse before a pre-dawn summit push to Low’s Peak.
The area around the mountain was protected as a park and recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000 for its exceptional biodiversity and large number of endemic species. Park authorities manage permits, guiding requirements and trail maintenance.
Mount Kinabalu sits inland in northern Sabah, Borneo, with the park accessed via the town of Kota Kinabalu to the west and a network of park entrances and trails leading into the mountain massif.
- Elevation and status: At 4,095 metres it is the highest mountain in Malaysia and the centerpiece of a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2000.
- Climbing permits and logistics: Climbing the summit requires a permit and a licensed guide; most ascents are done over two days with an overnight stop at a mountain resthouse.
What to See #
- Kinabalu Park: A protected park centred on the mountain and surrounding forests that serves as the base for climbers and researchers and contains visitor facilities and trails.
- Low's Peak: The mountain summit area that includes the highest point of Mount Kinabalu and the final ridge reached by climbers; the summit is the primary objective for most ascents.
- Laban Rata: A high-altitude rest station used by climbers on overnight climbs to the summit; it provides dormitory-style accommodation and weather shelter.

Tips for Visiting Mount Kinabalu #
- Book summit climbs and huts well in advance and plan to start the summit push from Timpohon Gate pre-dawn-this is the standard/most-used starting point for the Southeast Asian Route and gives the best chance of reaching the summit on schedule.
- Use Kinabalu Park HQ (the park headquarters area) to pick up permits, guides and up-to-date weather information rather than assuming conditions; guided climbs are compulsory for the summit route.
- Most visitors focus just on the summit; allow time for the park's lower-elevation trails and the botanical displays near the park HQ, which showcase the mountain's rare plant diversity and help with acclimatisation.
