Mount Karthala is an active shield volcano that dominates the central highlands of Grande Comore (Ngazidja) in the Comoros archipelago. It is the country’s highest mountain and one of the largest active volcanoes in the region.
The summit area contains a large crater and volcanic slopes covered by montane forest and lava fields in places; periodic eruptions have produced lava flows and ash deposits that have altered the landscape. The volcano is of interest to scientists and experienced trekkers, though access and safety depend on current volcanic activity.
Mount Karthala sits near the interior of Grande Comore and is visible from the island’s coastal settlements, including the capital, Moroni. It is the dominant topographic feature of the island.
