Mount Karisimbi
Volcano Highest Rwandan volcano and popular trekking summit
As the Virunga range’s highest peak on the Rwanda-DRC border, Mount Karisimbi (about 4,500 m) attracts experienced trekkers for multi‑day climbs, alpine conditions and wide views over volcanically rugged terrain.
Mount Karisimbi is a stratovolcano in the Virunga Mountains on the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and is the highest peak in Rwanda. The mountain is volcanic in origin and forms part of the high, forested ridge of the Virunga chain.
It is a popular objective for experienced trekkers and mountaineers, typically climbed as a multi-day trek with steep sections and high-altitude conditions near the summit. Routes approach through mountain forest and alpine terrain and require appropriate equipment and acclimatization.
The Virunga volcanoes were formed by volcanic activity along the western branch of the East African Rift; Karisimbi and neighbouring peaks have long been part of local geography and mountaineering history. Management of approaches commonly involves local guides and park authorities.
Karisimbi sits on the Rwanda-DRC border in the northern highlands of Rwanda, within the Virunga massif, and overlooks highland valleys and neighbouring volcanoes; the nearest major Rwandan towns are several hours’ drive depending on route and access.
