Mount Ishizuchi is the highest mountain on Japan’s island of Shikoku, reaching 1,982 meters, and is located in Ehime Prefecture. It is a well-known sacred peak with a long history as a pilgrimage destination.

The mountain is popular for hiking and pilgrimage; the standard routes include exposed sections where fixed chains and ladders assist climbers on steep rock. On clear days the summit affords wide views that can include the Seto Inland Sea.

Ishizuchi sits in northwestern Shikoku and is accessible from surrounding towns in Ehime Prefecture, forming the centerpiece of local mountain worship and outdoor recreation.

  • Chain sections: Steep, chain-assisted sections near the top require hands-on scrambling and are a distinctive part of the ascent for pilgrims and hikers.
  • Elevation and rank: Summit is 1,982 meters and is the highest point on the island of Shikoku.

How to Get to Mount Ishizuchi #

Take the JR line to Saijō (on Shikoku) and from Saijō Station catch a local bus or taxi to the Ishizuchi Ropeway (the ropeway is the usual means to shorten the approach). The ropeway takes you up the mountain’s western flank, leaving a steep, final hiking section to the summit that includes exposed, chain‑assisted sections; expect a short but steep hike from the ropeway upper station to the summit. Local buses run seasonally to the ropeway from Saijō - check timetables in advance and allow a short taxi ride if bus times don’t match your arrival.

Tips for Visiting Mount Ishizuchi #

  • Start very early to avoid queues on the final, chain-assisted scrambling section to the summit-those chains are fixed and become bottlenecks later in the morning and on holiday weekends.
  • Visit outside Golden Week and major Japanese public holidays if possible; Ishizuchi is a popular destination for autumn foliage and pilgrim traffic, so weekdays will be noticeably quieter.
  • Respect the shrine and sacred sites near the summit-many climbers pause at the Shinto markers, and taking a moment for that cultural context adds to the experience that many overlook when rushing to the peak.
