Mount Heng (Hunan)

Mount Heng in Hunan Province, often called Nanyue Hengshan, is the southern of China’s Five Great Mountains and an important religious and cultural destination with temple complexes and pilgrimage routes.

The mountain is noted for its long-established temple complexes, notably the Nanyue Temple, pilgrimage stairways and forested slopes that lead to Zhurong Peak at roughly 1,300 metres. Visitors come for religious pilgrimage, temple architecture, and relatively short mountain walks rather than high-altitude climbing.

Mount Heng has been a religious centre for Taoist and Buddhist practice for centuries, with temples and shrines rebuilt and expanded across successive dynasties. The site retains layers of historical architecture and continues to function as an active place of worship and pilgrimage.

The mountain massif lies in Hunan Province near the city of Hengyang in south-central China and occupies a prominent position in the local landscape as a named cultural and natural landmark.
