Mount Haku (Hakusan) is a volcanic peak on the border region of central Japan and is recognized as one of the country’s three sacred mountains along with Fuji and Tate. Its summit rises to about 2,702 metres and it is the centrepiece of Hakusan National Park.

Trails, alpine flora and summer hiking are primary reasons people visit, with designated routes and mountain huts used by climbers. The mountain supports distinctive high-altitude ecosystems and is valued both for natural scenery and religious-cultural associations.

Historically it has been a site of mountain worship and pilgrimage dating back many centuries, with shrines and mountain-religion practices recorded in local tradition. Modern protection as a national park preserves both the natural environment and access routes for recreational climbing.

Geographically Mount Haku straddles prefectural boundaries including Ishikawa and nearby jurisdictions and forms a prominent peak in the central Honshu highlands.

  • Elevation and status: The mountain's highest point is about 2,702 metres above sea level and it is one of Japan's 'Three Holy Mountains' alongside Fuji and Tate.
  • Best season: Alpine vegetation and hiking routes attract visitors mainly in summer; heavy winter snow makes access difficult outside the climbing season.

Tips for Visiting Mount Haku #

  • Climb or visit Mount Haku in summer (roughly July-September) when alpine trails are generally clear and the high-country wildflowers are at their best; outside that window snow and unstable conditions persist.
  • Approach the mountain via established Hakusan National Park trailheads and use public information from park authorities or local visitor centres to pick routes and confirm trail conditions.
  • Recognise Hakusan's cultural importance - it's one of Japan's three sacred mountains - and plan multi-day routes with hut reservations where available, as several popular trails are long and involve overnight stays.
  • To avoid the busiest sections, start hikes early on weekdays during high season and reserve any mountain huts or campsite spaces well in advance.

Best Time to Visit Mount Haku #
