The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-go and Gokayama are mountain settlements in central Japan noted for traditional wooden farmhouses constructed in the gassho-zukuri style, with steep thatched roofs. The villages preserve vernacular architecture adapted to heavy winter snowfall.

The villages developed over several centuries as agricultural communities; the gassho-zukuri construction technique evolved in response to climatic conditions and local materials, allowing storage and sericulture on upper levels of multi-storey farmhouses. Many houses date from the Edo period onward and have been maintained by village communities.

These settlements lie in mountainous areas of central Japan, with Shirakawa-go in Gifu Prefecture and Gokayama in Toyama Prefecture, set in narrow valleys roughly between the cities of Takayama and Kanazawa and accessible by regional roads and buses.

• Gassho-zukuri architecture: The houses use steep thatched roofs called gassho-zukuri designed to shed heavy winter snow; some farmhouses are multi-storey and several centuries old.

What to See#

• Ogimachi (Shirakawa-go): Ogimachi village in Shirakawa-go contains the largest concentration of gassho-zukuri farmhouse clusters, set on terraced land and visible from an overlooking observation point.
• Ainokura and Suganuma (Gokayama): Ainokura and Suganuma in Gokayama are smaller settlements with well-preserved steeply thatched farmhouses demonstrating regional construction techniques adapted to heavy snow.

Shirakawa-go is accessible by highway buses from Takayama (about 50 minutes) and Kanazawa (about 1.5-2 hours). The nearest train stations are in Takayama or Toyama; from there, buses serve the villages. Driving via the Tokai-Hokuriku expressway and local roads is possible but roads can be narrow and snow-covered in winter.

• Stay in a minshuku (family-run inn) in a gasshō-zukuri house to experience the architecture after sunset; many hosts will cook regional Hida cuisine.
• Visit the Gasshō-zukuri Minkaen open-air museum in Shirakawa-go for relocated and restored houses.
• Come in February for the thatch-snow festival when the villages are lit by lanterns and the roofs are dramatically capped with snow.
