Mount Haguro is one of the Three Mountains of Dewa (Dewa Sanzan) in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, with a summit around 414 metres above sea level. It is the most accessible of the three and serves as a primary pilgrimage route and religious center.

A long, forested stone stairway of 2,446 steps climbs to the summit precincts, passing through cedar groves and small temple sites; the route is used year-round and is especially popular for pilgrimage and short hikes. The mountain is also known for a five-storey wooden pagoda that stands along the approach and is an important historical structure.

Mount Haguro has been a focal point of Dewa Sanzan religious practice for centuries and forms part of continuous pilgrimage traditions tied to Shugendo and other mountain-religion practices.

The peak lies near the city of Tsuruoka in northeastern Yamagata Prefecture, rising from low coastal plains into a wooded mountain of modest elevation.

  • Stone steps count: A pilgrimage route of 2,446 stone steps leads from the base to the shrine precincts on the mountain.
  • Historic pagoda: The five-storey pagoda on the mountain is one of the region's most-photographed historic wooden structures.

How to Get to Mount Haguro #

Mount Haguro (one of the Dewa Sanzan) is reached from Tsuruoka city in Yamagata Prefecture. From JR Tsuruoka Station take a local bus (services to Dewa Sanzan/Haguro operated by the local bus company) to the Haguro area; the bus stop is a short walk from the shrine complex and the stone stairway leading up the mountain. The famous 2,446 stone steps begin right near the base shrine so once you alight at the Haguro stop the climb & temple precincts are immediately accessible on foot.

If driving, take the prefectural roads from Tsuruoka toward Haguro; parking is available near the base shrine and pagoda.

Tips for Visiting Mount Haguro #

  • Climb the stone staircase at dawn to experience the 2,446 cedar steps and reach the five‑story pagoda with far fewer people - the site is part of the Dewa Sanzan pilgrimage and is busiest later in the morning and on weekends.
  • Most visitors focus on the summit steps; don't miss the atmospheric cedar forest and the multiple shrine buildings along the route, which are rich in cultural detail but easy to pass by in a hurry.
  • If you want to avoid the main crowds, visit on weekdays or combine an early-morning climb with a later visit to Tsuruoka (the nearest city) rather than arriving at mid‑day when tour groups are common.
