Mount Empung is a stratovolcano on Sulawesi island in North Sulawesi province, Indonesia, closely associated with the adjacent Mount Lokon. It is part of a local volcanic complex that includes summit craters and fumarolic activity.
The volcano presents a steep conical form with a summit crater; the surrounding area includes agricultural and volcanic landscapes and is visited by people interested in volcanoes and local scenery. Access and approach are handled locally through nearby towns and organized tours.
The feature is the product of Holocene volcanic activity and forms one element of the Lokon-Empung complex; the two cones have been described together in volcanic monitoring and local geological reports. The broader area has a history of volcanic activity and occasional eruptive events recorded by Indonesian monitoring agencies.
Geographically the volcano lies on Sulawesi’s northern peninsula, within North Sulawesi province and relatively close to the city of Manado and the town of Tomohon, which serve as common bases for visits to the area.
