Mount Elgon National Park protects the Ugandan side of Mount Elgon, an extensive extinct shield volcano on the Uganda-Kenya border; the highest points on the massif reach above 4,000 metres. The park conserves a sequence of habitats from lower forests to alpine moorland.

The volcano has a long geological history as an extensive shield volcano; human use of its slopes includes traditional grazing and seasonal activities by local communities. The area has been designated as a national park to protect its landscapes and biodiversity.

The park occupies the eastern highlands of Uganda on the border with Kenya, in the country’s Eastern Region; the massif rises steeply from surrounding lowlands and is accessed from towns in the foothills.

  • Volcanic massif and summit: The mountain is an extinct shield volcano with a large, forested massif; the highest point on the Ugandan side reaches around 4,321 metres.
  • Habitats and hiking: The national park protects montane forest, bamboo and Afro‑alpine moorland and is used for multi‑day hikes that require navigation through varied vegetation zones.

What to See #

  • Wagagai Summit: Wagagai (also spelled Wagai or Wagagai Peak) is the mountain's highest summit that lies on the Uganda side of the massif and is the destination for most long ascents.
  • Sipi Falls area: Sipi Falls and associated escarpments on the eastern slopes that are commonly used as access points and are a notable local attraction near the park's boundaries.

Tips for Visiting Mount Elgon National Park #

  • Approach from Kapchorwa or Bungoma depending on the trailhead; Sipi or Budadiri towns are common staging points on the Ugandan side.
  • Hire a local guide - routes cross fragile moorland and local guides know the old elephant paths, caves and hot springs.
  • Bring warm layers for early morning and overnight; temperatures on the plateau can drop sharply.
  • Ask to visit the caves and the healing hot springs near the caldera rim - many visitors skip them.
