Mount Elgon
Mountain Extinct shield volcano straddling Kenya-Uganda border
An eroded shield volcano on the Kenya-Uganda border offering forested slopes, caves and established trekking routes; hikers and climbers visit for multi-day routes, highland scenery and ancient forest zones.
Mount Elgon is an extinct shield volcano straddling the Uganda-Kenya border, whose highest summit (Wagagai) reaches about 4,321 metres. The massif is notable for its broad, high-elevation plateau and extensive erosional features.
Trails and routes across forested slopes lead to waterfalls, deep gorges, and lava-formed caves such as Kitum Cave; upland moorland and bamboo zones give way to high cliffs and crater remnants near the summit. The mountain is visited for hiking, cave visits, birding, and cultural interactions with communities on its slopes.
The volcano formed through long-lived eruptions and has been deeply dissected by rivers and erosion, producing large caldera-like features and cliffs. Human use has included indigenous settlement and, in modern times, national park designation and conservation efforts across both Ugandan and Kenyan sides.
Mount Elgon sits on the border between eastern Uganda and western Kenya, rising from surrounding plains and farmland; the nearest major towns are a few tens of kilometres away on either side of the border.
- Volcanic form: The mountain has one of the largest base circumferences of any African volcano, producing broad, gently sloping flanks rather than a sharp cone.
What to See #
- Kitum Cave: A large cave system on the Kenyan flank visited by elephants and noted for salt licks and bat populations; it is accessible from park tracks and has been studied by biologists.
- Wagagai (summit): The mountain's highest summit, located on the Ugandan side and reaching about 4,321 metres, forming part of the mountain's broad volcanic massif.
How to Get to Mount Elgon #
Mount Elgon is accessed from Kenya via the town of Kitale (the usual Kenyan gateway) and from Uganda via Mbale. To reach the Kenyan side, travel by road to Kitale and then continue by local roads toward the park entrances; on the Ugandan side travel to Mbale and then onward to the Sipi/Sibiny offices and trailheads. Local buses, matatus and taxis serve Kitale and Mbale, and from those towns you’ll need local transport to the park trailheads.
Tips for Visiting Mount Elgon #
- Aim for the dry seasons (roughly January-March and July-October) for firmer trails and clearer weather on the mountain; the wet months commonly bring slippery conditions and low visibility.
- Hire a local registered guide/park ranger and arrange permits in advance-Mount Elgon straddles the Kenya-Uganda border and guided routes improve safety, navigation and access to park facilities.
- Use Kitale (the nearest large Kenyan town) as your usual gateway to the Kenyan side of Mount Elgon and allow an extra day for acclimatization and to avoid attempting high sections late in the afternoon when storms are more likely.
Best Time to Visit Mount Elgon #
