Mount Elbert
Mountain Colorado's highest peak and Rocky Mountain summit
Mount Elbert, the highest peak in Colorado and the Rocky Mountains, is popular with hikers and backpackers who tackle its non-technical but high‑altitude trails for summit views and mountain camping.
Mount Elbert is the highest peak in the Rocky Mountains and the state of Colorado, with an elevation of 4,401.2 m (14,440 ft). It is a dominant summit in the Sawatch Range and a benchmark peak for high-altitude hiking in the region.
The mountain is frequently hiked via well-established routes that gain roughly 1,500-1,800 m of elevation from the nearest trailheads; typical round trips take a full day for fit hikers. Popular access points are on the mountain’s eastern and northern flanks and trails are generally non-technical in summer, with snow and ice common outside July to September. Views from the summit extend across the Sawatch Range and neighboring high peaks on clear days.
Named for Samuel Hitt Elbert, the peak emerged through the same uplift and erosion processes that formed the central Colorado Rockies. It has been a target for mountaineers and surveyors since the 19th century and later became a popular goal for recreational hikers.
The mountain sits centrally in Colorado’s Sawatch Range in Lake County, near the historic mining town of Leadville and the Twin Lakes area. It lies inland on the Continental Divide in central Colorado.

Tips for Visiting Mount Elbert #
- Start very early (pre-dawn) on summit day to be off the peak well before the common afternoon thunderstorm window during summer and to increase chances of calmer wind and clearer views.
- Treat Mount Elbert as a high-altitude day climb - allow time to acclimatize beforehand, set a conservative turnaround time, and choose one of the established routes (round-trip length typically runs around 8-12 miles depending on trailhead) rather than attempting new lines.
- Expect exposed high-elevation conditions near the summit even in summer; plan your ascent so you reach the top in the morning and descend before weather commonly builds later in the day.
Best Time to Visit Mount Elbert #
Best midsummer (July-September) for the warmest, snow-free climbing window on Colorado's highest peak; expect cold summit temperatures and midday storms.
