Mount Diablo is a prominent peak in the San Francisco Bay Area located in Contra Costa County, California, with a summit elevation around 1,173 metres (3,849 feet). It sits within Mount Diablo State Park and dominates local skyline views.

The peak has long been a landmark for Indigenous peoples of the region and later for settlers and surveyors; the area around the mountain has been set aside as a state park to conserve its natural and recreational values. Over time roads, trails and park facilities have been added to support public access.

How to Get to Mount Diablo #

From San Francisco or Oakland, take I-680 or I-24 toward Walnut Creek/Clayton and follow signs to Mount Diablo State Park. Public transit to nearby towns is possible but driving is the most direct way to reach trailheads and the summit road.

Tips for Visiting Mount Diablo #

  • Drive up the north gate (Mitchell Canyon Road) for a gentler ascent; the summit road can be steep and winding.
  • On clear days the summit panorama includes the San Francisco skyline and Sierra Nevada; sunrise and sunset are especially rewarding.
