Mount Damavand

Mount Damavand is a stratovolcano in the Alborz range of northern Iran and the country’s highest mountain at 5,610 m. It is a prominent, solitary cone with cultural and geological significance in Iran.

Climbing routes approach from the south and southeast, with established base camps such as Bargah-e-Sevom used by trekkers and climbers. The mountain is non-explosive in historical times but has warm fumarolic activity near the summit and exhibits geothermal features.

Damavand is a popular mountaineering destination with non-technical summer routes, though altitude, weather, and loose volcanic rock present hazards. Conservation and route management are coordinated by local mountaineering organizations.

Geographically it rises in the central Alborz range roughly 60 to 70 km northeast of Tehran and is visible from the surrounding plains on clear days.

• Summit crater: Summit crater area with fumarolic vents that occupy the topmost cone and occasionally emit sulfurous gases in warm seasons.
• Southern base camps: Bargah-e-Sevom and other well-known base camps on the southern approach that serve as staging points for summit attempts.
