Mount Alayta
Volcano Large shield volcano in Ethiopia's Afar Region
In Ethiopia’s Afar Region, Mount Alayta is a remote shield volcano noted for recent lava fields and stark desert landscapes. Geology-minded visitors and expedition groups explore its volcanic terrain and off‑road routes.
Mount Alayta is a shield volcano in the Afar Region of northeastern Ethiopia, located within the Afar Depression. The volcanic complex is characterised by extensive basaltic lava fields and linear fissure vents.
The volcano forms part of the active rift and tectonic system of the Afar and is of interest to volcanologists because its eruptions produce extensive lava flows rather than central explosive activity. The area is sparsely populated and remote.
Volcanic activity in the field has produced relatively recent lava flows and the region remains tectonically active as part of the East African Rift system.
Mount Alayta sits in an arid rift landscape in northeastern Ethiopia’s Afar Region, well away from major population centres and reachable only by long overland travel.
- Volcanic style: The volcanic complex is composed mainly of broad basaltic lava fields and fissure vents rather than a single steep cone, typical of rift-related shield volcanism in the Afar Depression.
