Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Barquq

The Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Barquq is a late 14th-century Mamluk religious and funerary complex in historic Cairo, commissioned by Sultan Barquq. The compound combines a mosque with a madrasa and the sultan’s mausoleum and exemplifies the architectural and decorative vocabulary of early Mamluk Cairo.

Visitors commonly note the stone-carved entrance portal, the prayer hall layout, and the mausoleum chamber that contains Barquq’s tomb. The complex was designed both for congregational worship and for the patron’s funerary monument.

Constructed under Sultan Barquq in the late 1300s, the complex reflects Mamluk patronage and the development of combined madrasa‑mosque‑mausoleum buildings in Cairo’s urban fabric.

The complex is located in the historic core of Cairo, on or close to al-Muizz Street, within the district often called Islamic Cairo and near other major medieval monuments and souks.
