mortuary complex of Pepi I
Archaeological Site Old Kingdom Egyptian mortuary complex of Pharaoh Pepi I
The pyramid complex of Pharaoh Pepi I at Saqqara, part of Egypt’s Old Kingdom necropolis; visitors tour pyramid ruins, burial chapels and nearby archaeological excavations.
The mortuary complex of Pepi I is an Old Kingdom royal funerary ensemble in the Saqqara necropolis, Giza Governorate, built for Pharaoh Pepi I of the Sixth Dynasty (24th century BC). It comprises a main pyramid, mortuary temple, causeway and several subsidiary pyramids.
Visitors encounter the main pyramid with its associated mortuary temple remains and a cluster of smaller queen pyramids. The interior of the king’s burial complex contains examples of Pyramid Text inscriptions, and the site is commonly visited together with other monuments across Saqqara.
The complex was commissioned by Pharaoh Pepi I (Sixth Dynasty) as his funerary monument and cult centre; it was used for royal burial rites and the maintenance of the king’s funerary cult. Like many Saqqara monuments it was altered by later reuse and suffered damage from antiquities removal and stone robbing, and has been studied by archaeologists since the 19th century.
The complex lies in the Saqqara necropolis within the greater Memphite funerary landscape in the Giza Governorate, on the west bank of the Nile and within the same archaeological zone as other Old Kingdom pyramids and mastaba cemeteries.
- Pyramid Texts: Interior surfaces of the king's burial chamber preserve examples of Pyramid Texts, among the key sources for Old Kingdom funerary religion.
- Context: Located within the Saqqara necropolis, the complex sits among many other Old Kingdom and later monuments, so a visit is typically combined with nearby sites such as the Step Pyramid complex.
