Archaeological Site Ancient Cilician city ruins near Adana
An ancient city on the Ceyhan River in Adana Province with Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine layers; visitors inspect archaeological remains, Ottoman‑era streets and regional museums that document Cilician history.
Mopsuestia was an ancient city in the region of Cilicia, located on the banks of the Ceyhan River in what is now Adana Province, Turkey. The site includes archaeological remains from Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine occupation and served as an important regional centre in antiquity.
Surviving features at and near the site include bridge remains, foundations of urban structures and evidence of later medieval occupation; the location was also a Byzantine bishopric and an active urban settlement through multiple historical periods. The site has been the subject of archaeological study and conservation efforts.
The city originated in the Hellenistic period and continued to be inhabited through Roman and Byzantine times, changing hands during the early medieval era and later historic periods.
Mopsuestia is situated near the modern village of Yakapınar (historically called Misis) on the Ceyhan River in Adana Province in southern Turkey.
- Misis Bridge: The Roman-era Misis (Mopsuestia) Bridge over the Ceyhan River is among the most visible remains and is accessible to visitors.
Tips for Visiting Mopsuestia #
- Combine the archaeological area with the nearby Misis (Mopsuestia) Mosaic Museum in Yakapınar-most visitors overlook the museum's mosaics while passing through the region, so check its opening hours first.
- Visit in the cooler morning or late-afternoon hours to avoid the midday heat common in Adana Province and to see the riverfront ruins and the historic Misis bridge when they're less crowded.
- Reach the site by road from Adana along the D‑400 corridor and follow local signs to Misis/Yakapınar; allowing a local driver or guide can help locate the smaller, less-signposted ruins.
