Monywa City
City in Sagaing Region, Myanmar
On the Chindwin River, Monywa is known for sprawling pagodas—Thanboddhay's mosaic stupas and the Po Win Taung cave shrines—plus river cruises and night markets selling fried snacks. Expect temple tours and slow river life.
Why Visit Monywa?#
Set on the Chindwin plain, Monywa attracts visitors with monumental Buddhist sites and hidden cave complexes. Thanboddhay Pagoda’s thousands of mosaics and the massive reclining Buddha at Bodhi Tataung contrast with the Po Win Taung caves, where carved chambers and ancient Buddha images reveal centuries of monastic devotion. Riverfront markets and simple local life complete the picture. It’s a stop for travelers drawn to large-scale sacred art and less-visited cultural landmarks.
