Montfort Castle
Archaeological Site Crusader-era fortress ruins on a Galilee hilltop
A Crusader ruin in northern Israel’s Upper Galilee, Montfort Castle sits on a forested ridge; hikers visit its fortifications, trails and views over the Hula Valley and surrounding hills.
Montfort Castle is the ruined Crusader fortress of the Teutonic Order in northern Israel, built in the early 13th century and perched on a narrow limestone ridge. It was constructed as a purpose-built stone castle and served as an important fortified headquarters for the Order in the late Crusader period.
Surviving remains include foundations of the inner ward, stretches of curtain wall and carved rock-cut cisterns and service terraces that follow the ridge-line; the compact plan exploits the natural defensible position. The castle is visited for its ruins and views rather than for large standing structures, and it is a well-known Crusader-period monument in the region.
The Teutonic Order acquired and consolidated the site in the 13th century and enhanced its fortifications; the fortress was besieged and fell during the Mamluk campaigns that dismantled the Crusader state in the late 13th century. Subsequent centuries saw the place abandoned as a major stronghold, leaving the ruins visible today.
Montfort occupies a rocky ridge in northern Israel’s Upper Galilee, within the modern Northern District and overlooking the surrounding Galilean hills, roughly east of the coastal plain near the city of Acre (Akko). Access is by local roads and hiking tracks from nearby villages and trails.
