Beach Black-sand beach famous for sea turtle nesting
Black-sand Pacific beach famed for sea turtle nesting, fishing villages and mangrove boat trips; visitors come for turtle releases, beach walks and local seafood.
Monterrico is a coastal beach area on Guatemala’s Pacific coast known for its black volcanic sand and significant sea-turtle nesting activity. It is a major local destination for ecotourism and wildlife conservation.
The beach and nearby mangrove estuaries are the main draws, offering long stretches of dark sand, surf suitable for swimming in places, and boat trips through mangrove channels. Community-run turtle conservation stations protect nests and run public turtle release events; several species of marine turtles nest here during the season.
Originally a fishing village and local market town, Monterrico developed into a tourist and conservation destination in the late 20th century as sea-turtle protection and ecotourism programs grew. Local communities and NGOs continue to manage nest protection and education programs.
Situated on Guatemala’s Pacific coast, the area is a coastal town and beach complex with mangroves and estuaries. It is reachable by road from Guatemala City and coastal ports, and forms part of the Pacific lowland shoreline.
- Turtle nesting season: Night-time nest patrols and guided releases are most active during the main nesting season, typically from July through December.
- Best time for mangrove tours: Boat tours through the mangrove channels are a common way to see local birds and estuarine wildlife and are usually best in the early morning or late afternoon.
What to See #
- Monterrico beach and shoreline: The shoreline and surf area consists of a long black-volcanic sand beach backed by mangrove channels and estuaries that are important for local fishing and birdlife.
- Turtle conservation stations and hatcheries: Community-based turtle conservation stations run patrols and nest-protection programs and operate public turtle-release events during the nesting season.
