Monte Grappa is a mountain massif in the Veneto region of northern Italy, with its highest point, Cima Grappa, around 1,775 metres. It is widely known as a site of major First World War battles and for its large military memorials.

The massif contains the Sacrario del Monte Grappa, an ossuary and memorial complex dating from the interwar period, along with wartime trenches, small museums and numerous plaques and monuments. Many visitors come for the historic memorials, the marked mountain trails and panoramic viewpoints that look over the Venetian plain and the Dolomites.

During the First World War the mountain was the scene of intense fighting in 1917-1918; afterwards it became a national memorial area and the focus for remembrance and battlefield preservation. The ossuary and memorial structures were built in the decades following the war to collect and commemorate the fallen.

Monte Grappa sits above the Veneto lowlands near towns such as Bassano del Grappa and Montebelluna and forms a prominent ridge on the eastern edge of the Venetian plain.

What to See#

• Sacrario del Monte Grappa: The Sacrario del Monte Grappa is a large military ossuary and memorial complex housing the remains of thousands of soldiers and dedicated to those who fell on the mountain during World War I; the building dates from the 1930s.
• Cima Grappa: Cima Grappa is the massif’s principal summit at about 1,775 metres and serves as the main viewpoint and starting point for trails and memorial sites.
• War memorial sites: Wartime trenches, memorials and small museums are located across the slopes, documenting the battles fought on the mountain in 1917-1918.

Monte Grappa is accessible by car from Bassano del Grappa via SP 148 and SP 3; parking and trailheads are available at various points. Regional buses serve some nearby towns-check local timetables.

• Visit the Sacrario del Monte Grappa (Great War memorial) for both historical context and panoramic views.
• Drive the winding SP 3/IV road to the summit but allow time: hairpin turns and narrow stretches slow progress.
• Autumn light is exceptional for photographing the terraces and war memorials.
