Monte Faito Mountains

Monte Faito is a mountain in the Monti Lattari range of Campania, southern Italy, rising to roughly 1,100 metres above sea level and overlooking the Bay of Naples. It is a well-known local recreational area with mountain woodland and viewpoints toward the sea.

The summit zone contains several viewing points and short walking trails; clear days afford wide panoramas over the Gulf of Salerno, the Sorrentine Peninsula and nearby islands. A cable car provides direct access from Castellammare di Stabia, and routes link the ridge to longer hikes on the Monti Lattari.

The area developed as a leisure and excursion destination in the 20th century with infrastructure to support day visitors and hikers. The cable car is the principal modern access feature connecting the coastal towns with the higher slopes.

Monte Faito sits above the Sorrentine coast in Campania, close to Castellammare di Stabia and Vico Equense, roughly 30 kilometres southeast of the city of Naples.

What to See#

• Cable car: Links the town of Castellammare di Stabia with the summit area by an aerial cable car that provides direct access for day visitors and hikers.

From Naples: take the Circumvesuviana line toward Sorrento and alight at Castellammare di Stabia (journey ~40 minutes). From the station it’s a short taxi or 15-25 minute walk to the Funivia del Faito (cable car) which ascends to the plateau. Driving: follow the SS145 toward Castellammare and then the SP1 up to the funivia and rifugi; parking is available at the cable-car station and at trailheads.

• Ride the Castellammare-Faito funivia for the views - it saves about 700 vertical metres of walking and gives the best photo angles of the Bay of Naples.
• Start hikes from the Rifugio Emilia or the cable-car station; the forest trails are well waymarked but become rooty and muddy after rain.
• If the summit seems socked in, wait 20-30 minutes; the microclimate often clears and delivers sudden panoramas of Vesuvius and Capri.
• Avoid weekends in August when Neapolitans flee the coast - mornings on weekdays are quietly beautiful.
