Monte Amiata
Mountain Extinct volcanic mountain and Tuscan landmark
A dormant volcano in southern Tuscany, Monte Amiata offers forested hiking, chestnut groves and small ski runs; visitors combine outdoor trails with medieval hilltop towns like Abbadia San Salvatore.
Monte Amiata is an extinct volcanic massif in southern Tuscany with a summit around 1,738 metres above sea level, forming a prominent regional high point. The mountain is characterised by forested slopes and long-standing mountain communities.
The massif offers marked hiking trails, forest walks through beech and chestnut woodlands, and small ski facilities operating in winter on prepared slopes. Visitors also come for rural towns, local cuisine based on chestnuts and game, and nearby thermal springs in the surrounding Tuscan landscape.
Monte Amiata is of volcanic origin and last erupted in the distant geological past; over centuries its slopes supported forestry, mining and pastoral activities, and more recently developed tourism and recreational uses. The area includes historic villages and churches tied to medieval and early modern local economies.
Monte Amiata rises in southern Tuscany between the provinces of Siena and Grosseto; principal towns on or near its slopes include Abbadia San Salvatore and Piancastagnaio, and the massif lies inland from the Tyrrhenian coast.

How to Get to Monte Amiata #
Monte Amiata is reached by road from nearby Tuscan towns such as Abbadia San Salvatore and Arcidosso: drive onto regional and provincial roads from the Siena/Grosseto area toward those towns, then follow local roads up onto the mountain where there are parking areas and trailheads. Public buses connect some surrounding towns to Abbadia San Salvatore; from those bus stops you can join marked hiking trails to summit areas.
Tips for Visiting Monte Amiata #
- For seasonal experiences, visit in autumn to catch chestnut festivals and harvest activity on the lower slopes, and in summer for clear views from the summit area.
- Approach via the towns of Abbadia San Salvatore or Piancastagnaio-both serve as practical bases with road access, parking, and local trailheads up the mountain.
- Instead of sticking to the summit, explore the wooded lower slopes and traditional villages where you'll find less-touristed trails and local rural culture that many hikers miss.
Best Time to Visit Monte Amiata #
Late spring through early autumn is best for hiking and sightseeing on Monte Amiata; winter can offer snow but is less predictable for outdoor access.
