Mons Claudianus is the archaeological name for a Roman-period quarry site in Egypt’s Eastern Desert, where imperial quarries extracted hard stone such as granodiorite for use in Roman architecture and sculpture. The site comprises quarry faces and a substantial camp that supported quarrying operations.

Excavations have revealed the layout of living quarters, workshops, supply structures and a road network used to transport stone toward the Nile and the Red Sea. The large number of ostraca and inscriptions recovered has provided detailed evidence about workforce, provisioning and administration.

The quarry was active mainly during the early imperial centuries and was abandoned in late antiquity when quarrying activity shifted or demand changed. Today Mons Claudianus is studied for its contribution to our understanding of Roman logistics and imperial building programmes.

It lies in the Eastern Desert of Egypt, within the broad desert corridor between the Nile and the Red Sea coast.

  • Period and purpose: A Roman quarry and military-civilian camp in Egypt's Eastern Desert used mainly in the 1st-3rd centuries AD to extract granodiorite for imperial monuments.
  • Archaeological evidence: Archaeological remains include barracks, workshops and a large number of inscribed potsherds (ostraca) that document daily life and logistics at the site.
