How to Get to Mongar#
Mongar is in eastern Bhutan; most international visitors arrive at Paro International Airport (PBH) and continue by domestic flight or long road transfer to reach Mongar. Yonphula is the nearest domestic airport when flights operate; otherwise overland travel across Bhutan’s mountain roads is the standard option.
Paro International Airport (PBH): Paro is Bhutan’s main international gateway; most visitors fly into Paro and continue overland to eastern Bhutan. Road travel from Paro/Thimphu to Mongar is long (typically 8-12 hours depending on stops and road conditions); expect a private car hire or tourist vehicle to cost roughly USD 200-350 for the full transfer.
Yonphula Airport (YON): Yonphula (near Trashigang) is the closest domestic airport serving eastern Bhutan and is used when domestic flights are available. Flights from Paro/Thimphu to Yonphula are irregular and operated by the domestic carriers; a short taxi or car transfer from Yonphula to Mongar takes about 2-3 hours by road and local taxis/private transfers typically cost the equivalent of USD 20-60 depending on vehicle and luggage.
Train: Bhutan has no railway network.
Bus: Overland travel is the normal way to reach Mongar from western Bhutan. Regular inter-district buses and shared jeeps run from towns like Trashigang and from central hubs such as Thimphu or Gelephu on multi-day or single-day routes. Expect bus/jeep legs to be slow on mountain roads - typical point-to-point sections are several hours; local shared-vehicle fares are low (often a few US dollars for short legs) but longer private transfers will be considerably more.
How to Get Around Mongar#
There is no rail network in Bhutan; travel to Mongar is normally by domestic flight when available (Yonphula) or by long road transfers from Paro/Thimphu. For most visitors a private car or arranged transfer is the most comfortable and reliable option; local buses and shared jeeps are cheaper but slower.
- Domestic flights (USD 50-200 (approx.)) - Domestic carriers operate limited scheduled flights between Paro, Bumthang, Yonphula and a few other airfields. Flights are weather-dependent and often fill early; when available they save many hours of road travel. Book domestic flights well in advance through your tour operator or the carrier.
- Inter-district buses / shared jeeps (BTN small (a few USD) for short legs) - Shared jeeps and buses link district towns; they are the cheapest option but run on fixed or semi-fixed schedules and can be slow on winding mountain roads. Be prepared for basic seating and occasional stops; luggage allowances are small. Bring warm clothing for high passes.
- Private car / taxi (USD 150-350 (approx.)) - Hiring a private car/driver is the most convenient choice for door-to-door travel in eastern Bhutan and lets you stop en route. Expect a full-day transfer from central Bhutan to cost substantially more than local fares; negotiate price and confirm included fuel and driver expenses beforehand.
- Local buses and minibuses (BTN (very low)) - Within Mongar District and neighbouring towns, minibuses and local buses handle short hops between villages and market towns. Timetables can be informal; ask locals or your guesthouse for current departure points and times.
- Walking - Walking is practical for short distances inside towns and to nearby viewpoints or local trails; mountain terrain can be steep so good footwear is recommended. Distances between villages can be long - plan transport for longer journeys.
