Mönch

Monch is a major peak in the Bernese Alps of Switzerland, situated between the Eiger and the Jungfrau and forming part of the classic alpine skyline above the Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald valleys. It reaches an elevation of 4,107 metres.

The mountain is popular with mountaineers and forms part of the high-Alpine massifs visited from the Jungfraujoch and nearby mountain railways. Routes onto the summit require glacier travel and alpine mountaineering experience, while the surrounding area offers extensive hiking, viewing points and alpine facilities.

The peak and its neighbouring glaciers have been the focus of mountaineering since the 19th century and are integrated into the protected Jungfrau-Aletsch region. The alpine environment is shaped by extensive glaciation and high mountain weather conditions.

Monch sits in the Bernese Oberland above the towns of Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald, in the central Swiss Alps; the Jungfraujoch saddle and railway lie close to the eastern side of the massif and provide easy high-level access for visitors to nearby viewpoints.
