Monastiraki is a historic neighborhood and market quarter in central Athens, Greece, known for its square, flea market and close proximity to major ancient monuments.
The modern name derives from a small monastery that once stood in the area; during Ottoman rule and later periods the district evolved into a commercial quarter. Many of today’s buildings date from the Ottoman and 19th-century periods, layered over ancient remains.
Monastiraki sits in the historic heart of Athens, immediately north of the Acropolis and within short walking distance of Syntagma Square and the main pedestrian routes of the old city.

How to Get to Monastiraki
Monastiraki is served by Monastiraki metro station (Lines 1 and 3) and is a short walk from Syntagma Square. It is within easy walking distance of the Acropolis and Plaka neighborhoods; many visitors arrive on foot from central Athens.
Tips for Visiting Monastiraki
- Visit late afternoon to watch street life spill into the pedestrianized lanes; the flea market closes earlier in the day on Sundays.
- Go upstairs: many of Monastiraki's best bars and antiques shops are on the upper floors overlooking the plaza.
- Avoid the main souvenir alleys if looking for serious antiquities - ask shopkeepers to show items kept in back rooms.
