Monastery of Batalha

The Monastery of Batalha (Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória) is a late 14th- to early 16th-century Portuguese monastery in Leiria District built to commemorate the 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota and noted for its large Gothic and Manueline architecture.

Founded by King João I after the 1385 victory, building began in 1386 and continued through the 15th and early 16th centuries as royal patronage funded additional chapels and decorative programmes. The complex served both as a monastery and a royal memorial and was adapted over time to reflect changing architectural styles.

The monastery stands in the town of Batalha in central Portugal’s Leiria District, set inland from the Atlantic coast and forming the focal point of the town.

What to See #

• Founder's Chapel: The Founder's Chapel (Capela do Fundador) contains tombs and funerary decoration commissioned by King João I and is one of the most ornate parts of the complex, built in the 15th century.
• Unfinished Chapels: The Unfinished Chapels (Capelas Imperfeitas) are an incomplete sequence of chapels begun in the late 15th century and left as exposed masonry and carved stonework, offering a view of the monastery's ambitious later building programme.
