The Monastery of Alcobaça is a 12th-century Cistercian monastery in central Portugal’s Leiria District, recognized for its large Gothic church and the outstanding funerary monuments of medieval royalty.

Founded in the 12th century under Cistercian rule, the monastery was a major ecclesiastical and economic centre in medieval Portugal and underwent construction and enlargement through the Middle Ages. It ceased to operate as a monastic community after wider 19th-century religious suppressions, but its principal buildings survive as a near-complete monastic ensemble.

The monastery sits in the town of Alcobaça in Portugal’s central region, within Leiria District, forming the historic core of the town.

• Royal tombs: The gilded, carved tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro are the site’s headline attraction and are located within the church choir area.

• Monastic church and tombs: The church contains the funerary monuments of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro, which are notable reclining effigies from the 14th century; the monastic complex also includes large cloisters and the former dormitory and refectory spaces characteristic of Cistercian design.
• Cloisters and monastic buildings: Two major cloisters - the Royal Cloister and the Chapter House cloister - form part of the surviving monastic plan, reflecting the Cistercian emphasis on communal monastic life and austerity.

The Monastery of Alcobaça is in the town of Alcobaça (Leiria District). Alcobaça is served by intercity buses from Lisbon (Rede Expressos and other operators) from Campo Grande/Sete Rios; by car it is roughly a 1.5-2 hour drive north from Lisbon via the A8/A1 corridor depending on route and traffic. In Alcobaça the monastery sits in the town centre and is a short walk from the bus terminal or main streets.

• Arrive early before the day‑trip buses from Lisbon and other cities to see the church interior and the royal tombs of Pedro and Inês with fewer people around.
• Combine Alcobaça with nearby Batalha on the same day-they are close enough for a sensible loop-and check the monastery's schedule for any religious services that may restrict access to parts of the church.
