The narrow streets and Swahili architecture of the Old Town, the 16th-century Portuguese fortress Fort Jesus, and waterfronts facing the deep Kilindini Harbour. The island contains markets, hotels and ferry and bridge connections to beaches and suburbs on the mainland.
The island developed as a fortified trading port under successive powers; Fort Jesus was constructed by the Portuguese between 1593 and 1596 and later saw Omani and British influence. Over time it became the focal point for the modern city’s expansion and port infrastructure.
Situated on Kenya’s coast in Mombasa County, the island sits within the city of Mombasa and is linked to the mainland by causeways and bridges. It lies on the Indian Ocean coast of southeastern Kenya and functions as the city’s island core and principal harbour area.
