How to Get to Mokhotlong#
Mokhotlong is a remote highland town best reached by road after arriving at Lesotho’s main airport (Moshoeshoe I International, MSU) or via South Africa (Johannesburg/Bloemfontein). Expect a two-stage trip: fly into Maseru or a South African hub, then take scheduled minibuses, intercity buses or private transfers into the highlands.
Moshoeshoe I International Airport (MSU): The main airport for Lesotho, located near Maseru. Taxi from MSU to Maseru city centre takes about 20-30 minutes; expect roughly ZAR 100-200 (LSL 100-200) for a private taxi and shared minibuses/arrivals vans for less (around ZAR 30-80). From Maseru you must continue by road to reach Mokhotlong (see By Train & Bus).
OR Tambo International Airport (JNB) / Bloemfontein Airport (BFN): Many international visitors arrive via Johannesburg (JNB) or regional South African airports and then cross into Lesotho by road. Intercity buses and shuttle operators run between Johannesburg and Maseru (4-5 hours from JNB); fares are typically ZAR 200-400. From Maseru, onward road travel to Mokhotlong is by minibus or private transfer (several hours).
Train: Lesotho has no national passenger rail network; the nearest major rail hub is in South Africa (e.g., Bloemfontein or Johannesburg). If you need rail connections use South African rail to a nearby border city then continue by road.
Bus / Minibus (shared taxi): The practical way into Mokhotlong is by road from Maseru. Shared minibuses (kombis) and hired minibuses connect Maseru with district towns; travel to Mokhotlong from Maseru typically takes 6-8 hours depending on road and weather. Prices vary by operator and vehicle: budget for roughly ZAR/LSL 100-400 for inter-district minibus services, more for private 4x4 transfers in the highlands.
How to Get Around Mokhotlong#
Mokhotlong and other Lesotho highland towns are best navigated by road: minibuses for budget travel, private 4x4 transfers for safety and reliability. There’s no passenger rail, and public services can be infrequent - arrange transfers in advance where possible.
- Intercity minibus / shared taxi (ZAR/LSL 100-400) - The most common public option for travel between Maseru and Mokhotlong. Vehicles are basic and routes can be indirect; expect long, sometimes bumpy journeys across mountain roads. Book at local bus ranks in Maseru or through guesthouses for scheduled departures; allow extra time for weather or road conditions.
- Private 4x4 / transfer (ZAR/LSL 800-2000 (approx)) - Recommended if you have luggage, tight timings or in bad weather. Drivers understand mountain roads and can be hired from Maseru or arranged through lodges. Prices are significantly higher than minibuses but offer door-to-door service and flexible departure times.
- Taxi (local) (ZAR/LSL 30-200) - Local metered or negotiated taxis are useful for short hops (e.g., Maseru airport to town) and for moving between nearby villages. Negotiate fares in advance for long inter-district trips; vehicles vary in comfort and availability can be limited in remote areas.
- Border bus / coach (from South Africa) (ZAR 200-400) - Long-distance coach companies (e.g., Intercape and regional operators) run routes from Johannesburg/Bloemfontein to Maseru. These are reliable for cross-border travel; from Maseru you’ll switch to local minibuses or private transfers to reach Mokhotlong.
- Motorbike / local taxi-boda (informal) (ZAR/LSL 10-50) - In some parts of Lesotho motorbike taxis operate for very short distances or to reach trails and remote villages. Use cautiously - helmets and safe riding standards are not always provided.
- Walking - Walking is practical inside the town and for short village trips; paths can be steep and uneven. Good footwear is essential and distances between services in the highlands can be long, so plan accordingly.
